Standard or heat-pump electric water heater?

A heat-pump water heater can sharply reduce electricity use, but the household only captures that value when the unit fits the space, supplies enough hot water, and remains in service long enough to repay its installed price difference.

Translate the national claim into your decision

ENERGY STAR reports that a certified heat-pump water heater can save a four-person household about 3,760 kWh per year versus a standard electric water heater. Its published payback table assumes an incremental cost of $1,503, an electricity rate of 14.6¢/kWh, and a 13-year life.

Confirm the heat source, air, drainage, and recovery

Space and temperature

Check the manufacturer’s required room volume, clearances, and operating temperature range. Ducting may change those requirements.

Condensate and sound

Plan a permitted condensate route and confirm that compressor and fan noise are acceptable at the proposed location.

Hot-water service

Compare first-hour rating, tank size, recovery behavior, and backup-resistance operation against peak household demand.

Because the unit draws heat from surrounding air, it can cool and dehumidify the installation space. In a heated enclosure during winter, some apparent water-heating savings may shift into the home’s space-heating load. The calculator does not automatically estimate that interaction.

Repricing ENERGY STAR’s four-person benchmark of 3,760 kWh saved per year at the EIA 2026-05 national residential average of 18.44¢/kWh produces about $693.34 in annual electricity savings. If the actual net installed premium were $1,503, simple payback would be about 2.2 years.

04 / SENSITIVITY

Make the decision survive less favorable conditions

Run low, expected, and high annual savings; then test the bill’s variable electricity rate and the years you realistically expect to own the unit. Add foreseeable electrical, drainage, ducting, or relocation work to the candidate purchase price.

Keep non-energy consequences visible rather than forcing them into invented dollar values. A shorter payback does not cure an undersized first-hour rating, an unacceptable installation location, or unavailable qualified service.
